I AM HERE TO HELP
As a mother of three, I get it: sleep is essential to a functioning, happy, and healthy family! I received my sleep certification through the Center of Pediatric Sleep Management in 2019, and I have supported over 1000 families to achieve the goal of improved sleep. In addition to managing Joyful Birthing, I work as the lead, US-based Pediatric Sleep Specialist for Cleo, a major Family Benefit Company, supporting dozens of families each week.
I believe helping a baby sleep well is an art, not a science. There is not a “one-size-fits-all” approach to improved sleep, as every child and family is unique with their own habits, styles, preferences, and needs. As such, my philosophy as a sleep consultant is to offer my expertise and work collaboratively with families to develop a customized approach so that they can follow through and achieve their goals. Because each parent and child is unique, this process often looks different for each family.
As your sleep consultant, I will work closely with you to select and refine an approach that you feel comfortable with, possibly pulling from several methods to strike the right balance for you & your child. With consistency, commitment, and a bit of tenacity, we will work to give you & your child the gift of improved sleep!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHY IS MY BABY/CHILD STRUGGLING TO SLEEP?
There are several factors that can cause either short-term or long-term sleep troubles. These include: being overtired or under-tired, overstimulated, a dependency on a caregiver to fall asleep (via feeding, rocking, holding, etc), having an inappropriate sleep schedule, suboptimal sleeping environments, lacking effective sleep associations, development milestones, illness, teething, and/or as children get older, behavioral issues. In working together with Boston Sleep Consultant, Ellie will assess the causes of your child’s sleep issues and will provide you with a specific action plan for improvement
WHEN CAN I SLEEP TRAIN MY BABY?
While we can work to instill healthy sleep habits from day 1, babies are not developmentally ready for sleep training until they are at least 16 weeks old. The first few months of a baby’s life are essential for attachment formation, brain development, and the establishment of bio-behavioral synchrony between caregivers and infants. Sleep interventions that focus on rigid schedules or parent-led sleep independence before 16 weeks may disrupt these essential processes. Boston Sleep Consultant, Ellie Lindenmayer, supports the development of early attachment and research-based recommendations to promote the health and well-being of your baby and strongly recommends waiting to sleep train until your baby is developmentally ready, which is typically between 4-6 months (signs of readiness include: having transitioned out of the swaddle, bringing hands to mouth, and the ability to roll from the back to the tummy).
WHAT EXACTLY IS “SLEEP TRAINING”?
Sleep training attempts to optimize restorative and consistent sleep. The ultimate goal of sleep training is to facilitate a baby’s natural sleep development and help them develop sleep habits that are sustainable for the whole family. It can be helpful to think of a baby’s sleep as a puzzle with many pieces supporting each other and fitting together just so. If we can line up all of the pieces, we can often achieve our sleep-related goals. There are a variety of methods for teaching babies and children the gift of independent sleep- some include much parental involvement while others include providing children with gradually increasing intervals of time on their own until they fall asleep. Boston Sleep Consultant, Ellie Lindenmayer, believes that sleep training is an involved, individualized process that will look different for each family based on their unique baby and parenting styles.
I AM HESITANT TO LET MY BABY CRY.
I get it. No parent likes to hear their baby cry. It feels counter-intuitive to allow your baby to cry and many parents worry that the crying involved in many sleep training methods will harm their baby. However, many parents find themselves in an unsustainable sleep situation due to lack of sleep from nighttime parenting, which can have a deleterious effect on maternal mental health. With buzzing social media feeds, endless Google searches, and conflicting research studies, it can be overwhelming and difficult to know how to best navigate sleep training while keeping your baby’s well-being and safety a top priority. As such, I wrote a comprehensive article addressing this common concern which includes a meta-analysis of the current research on sleep training.
